Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism Policy

1. Policy Statement

AL MANAR: Jurnal Komunikasi dan Pendidikan Islam is committed to publishing original scholarly work and maintaining high standards of academic integrity in the fields of communication and Islamic education.

Plagiarism, self-plagiarism, redundant publication, inappropriate duplicate publication, and other forms of misrepresentation of scholarly contributions are unacceptable. The journal expects all authors to uphold the principles of honesty, transparency, originality, and proper attribution throughout the research and publication process.

The journal's plagiarism policy is implemented in conjunction with its Publication Ethics, Author Guidelines, and relevant publication-ethics principles, including guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

2. Definition and Forms of Plagiarism

Plagiarism occurs when an author presents another person's words, ideas, arguments, data, research findings, or other intellectual contributions as their own without appropriate acknowledgment.

Plagiarism may take several forms, including:

  • Direct plagiarism: Copying words, sentences, paragraphs, or substantial portions of another work without appropriate quotation, attribution, or citation.

  • Paraphrasing plagiarism: Reproducing another person's ideas or arguments through paraphrasing without sufficient acknowledgment of the original source.

  • Data and visual plagiarism: Using research data, figures, tables, images, illustrations, or other materials without appropriate citation or permission when required.

  • Idea appropriation: Presenting another researcher's theories, concepts, analytical frameworks, or original arguments as one's own without proper acknowledgment.

  • Self-plagiarism and redundant publication: Reusing substantial portions of one's previously published or disseminated work without appropriate citation, disclosure, or scholarly justification.

Plagiarism may occur in research concerning communication, media, da'wah, Islamic education, digital religious engagement, educational practices, or other topics within the journal's scope. All submitted manuscripts must appropriately acknowledge the sources of their arguments, evidence, data, and interpretations.

3. Originality Requirements

Authors submitting manuscripts to AL MANAR: Jurnal Komunikasi dan Pendidikan Islam must ensure that their work is original, accurately referenced, and not simultaneously under consideration by another journal.

Any significant overlap with previously published articles, conference papers, theses, dissertations, preprints, books, reports, or other research outputs must be disclosed to the editorial office where relevant.

Previously disseminated material must be appropriately cited, and authors must clearly explain the original contribution of the submitted manuscript when it develops from earlier work. Reuse of an author's own material does not automatically constitute misconduct, but undisclosed or misleading reuse may raise concerns about self-plagiarism or redundant publication.

Authors must obtain the necessary permissions for copyrighted material when reuse is not otherwise permitted by applicable law or the relevant license.

Manuscripts must not contain fabricated citations, misleading source attribution, or textual or substantive material taken from other works without appropriate acknowledgment.

4. Plagiarism Screening

Submitted manuscripts may undergo editorial assessment and similarity screening using appropriate plagiarism-detection tools as part of the journal's originality assessment process.

The editorial team evaluates similarity reports by considering the sources, context, extent, and nature of textual overlap. Particular attention may be given to substantial overlap with previously published research, unattributed paraphrasing, duplicated arguments, and the reuse of data or other scholarly materials without appropriate disclosure.

A similarity percentage alone does not establish plagiarism and does not automatically determine manuscript acceptance or rejection. Properly cited quotations, standard methodological expressions, bibliographic entries, and other legitimate textual similarities must be assessed in context.

The journal does not apply a similarity score as a substitute for editorial judgment. Any decision concerning suspected plagiarism must consider the available evidence, the scholarly context, and the seriousness of the potential violation.

5. Handling Suspected Plagiarism

When potential plagiarism or inappropriate reuse is identified, the editorial office may examine the relevant sources, assess the extent of the overlap, and request clarification from the author.

Depending on the evidence and seriousness of the concern, possible actions include:

  • Requesting clarification, appropriate citation, or correction before proceeding with the evaluation.

  • Suspending editorial assessment while the concern is examined.

  • Rejecting the manuscript when substantial plagiarism or other serious originality concerns are established.

  • Referring the matter for further investigation when necessary and appropriate.

Authors will be given a reasonable opportunity to respond to concerns when appropriate. All allegations will be assessed fairly and confidentially, and suspected misconduct will not be treated as established fact without adequate examination.

The journal reserves the right to take appropriate editorial action in accordance with its Publication Ethics and relevant publication-ethics guidance.

6. Plagiarism Identified After Publication

Credible allegations of plagiarism or inappropriate reuse involving published articles will be investigated in accordance with the journal's Publication Ethics and procedures for handling research and publication misconduct.

Depending on the evidence, the extent of the overlap, and its implications for the reliability and integrity of the scholarly record, editorial action may include a correction, an expression of concern, or retraction.

Any correction, expression of concern, or retraction will be communicated transparently and linked to the affected article where technically feasible. Retracted articles will normally remain accessible with an appropriate notice to preserve the scholarly record, except where exceptional legal, ethical, or safety considerations justify removal.

The journal will handle allegations impartially, protect confidential information, and avoid presenting unverified allegations as proven misconduct.

7. Authors' Responsibilities

Authors are responsible for ensuring the originality, accuracy, appropriate attribution, and ethical integrity of their submitted manuscripts.

Authors must:

  • Cite all relevant sources accurately and acknowledge the intellectual contributions of other researchers.

  • Use quotation marks or other appropriate formatting when reproducing exact wording, together with proper citations.

  • Paraphrase and synthesize sources responsibly without misrepresenting the original meaning.

  • Disclose substantial reuse of previously published or disseminated material.

  • Obtain permissions for copyrighted materials when required.

  • Ensure that references, data, quotations, and claims can be verified and are represented accurately.

  • Verify content generated or assisted by artificial intelligence (AI), including citations, factual claims, and paraphrased material, and comply with the journal's AI-use policy.

The use of plagiarism-detection software or AI-based writing tools does not transfer responsibility for originality and academic integrity away from the authors. Authors remain accountable for the entire content of their submissions.

AL MANAR: Jurnal Komunikasi dan Pendidikan Islam reserves the right to reject manuscripts or take other appropriate editorial action when plagiarism or serious violations of academic integrity are established.
