A Syntactic Analysis of Al-Af‘al al-Khamsah in Surah Al-Baqarah (Verses 1–50): A Library Research

Abstract

This study aims to analyze al-af‘?l al-khamsah (the five verb forms) found in Surah Al-Baqarah verses 1–50 by identifying their morphological forms, syntactic functions, and grammatical inflections within the context of Qur'anic Arabic. Understanding these verb forms is essential because they represent a fundamental aspect of Arabic grammar and contribute to accurate interpretation of Qur'anic texts. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using library research methods. The Holy Qur'an served as the primary source of data, while classical Arabic grammar books, Qur'anic i‘rab references, tafsir literature, and relevant scholarly publications were used as supporting references to ensure comprehensive linguistic analysis. The findings reveal a total of fifty occurrences of al-af‘?l al-khamsah distributed across nineteen verses. Three morphological forms were identified, namely yaf‘al?na, taf‘al?na, and taf‘al?ni, with yaf‘al?na appearing most frequently. Most of the identified verbs occur in the nominative case, marked by the retention of the letter n?n, whereas verbs in the accusative and jussive cases are characterized by the omission of n?n. The study concludes that Qur'anic texts provide authentic and contextual linguistic evidence that can strengthen Arabic grammar instruction, particularly in teaching morphology and syntax through meaningful textual examples
