Cognitive Mechanisms in Arabic Derivative Processing: A Psycholinguistic Perspective

Abstract

The Arabic derivational system is a morphological characteristic closely related to cognitive processes in language processing. The complexity of the relationship between root words and morphological patterns indicates that Arabic language comprehension occurs not only structurally but also involves the speaker's mental activity. This study aims to analyze the cognitive mechanisms in Arabic derivational processing through a psycholinguistic perspective. The study used a qualitative approach with library research. Data were obtained from scientific articles, academic books, and various literature relevant to psycholinguistics and Arabic morphology through documentation study techniques. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis methods with the stages of data reduction, classification, interpretation, and synthesis. The results show that Arabic derivational processing involves mental representation of root words, recognition of morphological patterns (wazan), semantic activation, and integration of meaning in the mental lexicon. The Arabic derivational system also demonstrates cognitive efficiency because the relationship between root words and derivational patterns helps accelerate meaning access and language production. This study concludes that Arabic derivational functions not only as a word formation system but also represents a mental mechanism in language processing. Further research is recommended to develop empirical studies based on neurolinguistics or experimental approaches to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between Arabic morphology and human cognitive processes
