Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the contextual teaching approach in Arabic conversation instruction at the Language Center of Kyai Syarifuddin Islamic Institute in Lumajang. The significance of the study arises from the observable gap between students’ theoretical understanding of Arabic and their ability to use it in everyday communication. The researcher employed a descriptive-analytical method using observation, interviews, and document analysis as data collection techniques. The findings show that integrating real-life activities into the learning process—such as vocabulary memorization, paired dialogue practice, and the “tadoyyuf” activity—significantly improves students’ fluency and confidence in speaking Arabic. The study also reveals that a pesantren-based environment that enforces daily use of Arabic supports the success of this pedagogical model. It concludes that the contextual approach in Arabic speaking instruction is a practical and effective strategy for Islamic education institutions. The researcher recommends curriculum development that integrates contextual methods with structured language discipline to achieve optimal results.
