This study is entitled Audience Interpretation in the Case of the Death of a 4-Year-Old Toddler Due to Worm Infection. This research is motivated by the emergence of viral news on social media regarding the case of the death of a toddler named Raya due to worm infection which has generated various responses from the public. This case has attracted public attention because it is one of the cases that has received widespread attention in Indonesia regarding child health. This study aims to determine how the audience interprets the news and the factors that influence the audience's interpretation of health information on social media. The research method used is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation. Informants in this study were Generation Z mothers on Jalan Rimba Kemuning Palembang. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the audience has various interpretations of the news about the case. Based on Stuart Hall's reception theory, three positions of interpretation were found, namely dominant reading, where the audience fully accepts the media message and considers it an important warning about child health; negotiated reading, where the audience partially accepts the message but adapts it to personal experience; and oppositional reading, where the audience tends to be critical and considers the media news to be excessive. Factors influencing audience interpretation include education level, parenting experience, health knowledge, social environment, intensity of social media use, and digital literacy skills. The study's conclusions indicate that audiences actively interpret media messages. Social media plays a significant role in disseminating health information, but messages can be interpreted differently, necessitating appropriate, educational, and non-panic-inducing health communication.
