Representation of Siri' na Pacce Values in the Speech Practices of the Bugis-Makassar Community: An Ethnolinguistic Study and Its Relevance for Arabic Language Learning

This research explores the representation of Siri’ na Pacce values within the linguistic practices of the Bugis-Makassar community by employing a qualitative ethnolinguistic framework grounded in library research. The study is motivated by the observable decline in politeness and reciprocal respect in social interactions, alongside the increasing urgency to embed local wisdom in language education so that it attains deeper moral and spiritual significance. It seeks to elucidate the meanings, functions, and dynamic expressions of Siri’ na Pacce as articulated in academic writings and ethnographic scholarship, while also examining their relevance to the advancement of value-oriented and humanistic approaches to Arabic language learning. The data set comprises documents, peer-reviewed journal articles, and recent ethnographic literature pertinent to Bugis-Makassar culture, which were analyzed through thematic and interpretative methods to identify recurring patterns of meaning. The analysis yields four central themes: Siri’ as a discourse of honor and a mechanism of moral regulation; Pacce as a manifestation of social empathy and human solidarity; the interplay between language, identity, and spirituality; and the significance of Siri’ na Pacce values in shaping a humanistic, culturally rooted paradigm for Arabic language education. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that language operates not merely as a communicative tool but as an ethical and spiritual domain. On a theoretical level, the study enriches ethnolinguistic inquiry and value-based pedagogy, while on a practical level it offers a conceptual basis for developing Arabic language learning that is contextual, ethically informed, and grounded in local cultural wisdom
