The high unemployment rate among university graduates in Indonesia reflects a significant gap in career preparedness, largely attributed to low levels of career autonomy among students. This study aims to analyze the role of career counselors in fostering students’ career independence as a preventive strategy against graduate unemployment. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, the research was conducted across three state universities, involving four professional counselors, six final-year students, and two career program coordinators. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, then thematically analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model. Findings reveal five strategic roles of counselors: (1) facilitator of self and labor market exploration, (2) trainer of career decision- making skills, (3) enhancer of career self-efficacy, (4) bridge between academic learning and the world of work, and (5) agent of unemployment prevention through early intervention. The study demonstrates that proactive, strength-based, and culturally responsive career counseling effectively cultivates sustainable career autonomy among students. It is recommended that career counseling services be integrated into mandatory curricula and that counselors be positioned as strategic partners within the higher education ecosystem
