Abstract

Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, grew up in the digital era and was surrounded by social media. The background of this research is the phenomenon of "Digital Amnesia" which refers to a decrease in episodic memory due to social media multitasking, which is a unique challenge for Generation Z. The aim of this research is to investigate the impact of social media multitasking on episodic memory performance in Generation Z. This research used an online survey method with a questionnaire that measured the frequency of social media use, social media multitasking, and episodic memory performance. The results showed that Generation Z who frequently used social media (more than 2 hours per day) had an average episodic memory score of 61.9, while those who used social media less than 1 hour per day had an average score of 76.1. In addition, Generation Z who multitask on social media have an average episodic memory score of 61.9, while those who do not multitask have an average score of 76.1. In conclusion, social media multitasking has a negative impact on Generation Z's episodic memory. To prevent "Digital Amnesia," it is important for Generation Z to limit social media usage time, avoid multitasking, and increase focus through mindfulness exercises and maintaining good sleep patterns. Education and strategies for managing healthier social media use are very necessary. Further research is needed to deepen understanding and develop effective interventions in addressing the negative impact of social media multitasking on episodic memory.
